Telstra Announces 3G 2100Mhz Shutdown

Well, it’s finally arrived. Telstra have now confirmed as part of re-tuning activities in preparation for the larger 3G shutdown, have confirmed the reduction in capacity on the 2100Mhz across Australia. Therefore, any customers using services in a 2100Mhz only device are advised to upgrade to a 850Mhz 3G or 4G/LTE compatible device as soon as possible to avoid disruption. Here’s Telstra’s official statement below: “Since the launch of Next G ® network in 2006 any 3G2100MHz cells we have deployed were for capacity only (not coverage) and with the dissolution of the 3GIS partnership in 2012 any 3G 2100MHz cells were generally only retained where there was a pressing need for additional 3G capacity on top of the 3G coverage layer using 850MHz. From that time forward there has been little contiguous 3G2100 coverage. The closure of 2G in 2016 would have left any residual 2100-only devices with very fragmentary coverage. Customer Bulletin – Security and the LMU-3030

December 14, 2018 Dear Valued Customer, A recent disclosure by a security researcher regarding the LMU-3030 was sent to CalAmp’s Product Security team. The researcher claimed that they were able to cause an LMU-3030 to install modified/malicious firmware by redirecting it to a spoofed PULS maintenance server. CalAmp engineering and security reviewed the disclosure and have determined this was not a vulnerability, but rather the result of available security features on the 32-bit platform that were not enabled by the user. The specific security feature is digital signature checking, which has been supported since PULS version 2.0.2.0 (released March 2017), and 32-bit firmware version 6.1c (released June 28, 2017). When activated, the device and PULS will validate digital signatures (RSA-2048/SHA-256) during a firmware update. CalAmp recommends that all users enable the Level-1 security feature available on all of its 32-bit devices to significantly enhance the remote access protection in the device.
